The teacher makes a great point when she was talking about the difficulty that students have when first working with multiplication, in that they have to keep track of the number of groups, the size of the group, and what each number represents.  She also made a great point that when labeling the answer, they need to make sure what that represents as well. Keeping track of all of this, along with trying to understand multiplication as a way of finding the total of so many groups of so much, can be a rather daunting task for young students. A great deal of practice and opportunity needs to be given in order for student to really understand multiplication.
